Carbon Monoxide Safety Act
House Bill 1091

On Tuesday, March 24, 2009, Gov. Bill Ritter signed into law House Bill 1091, the Carbon Monoxide Safety Act. In response to two recent tragedies where locals died from carbon monoxide poisoning, the act prompts all home owners who are selling or renting their property to install carbon monoxide alarms on each level of the house. The law goes into effect on July 1st, 2009

Use of carbon monoxide alarms will be required in all homes that are equipped with a fuel-fired heater or appliance, fireplace, or attached garage. The alarms must be installed within 15 feet of the entrance to all bedrooms within the house. The CO alarms can be battery operated, hard-wired with battery back-up, or plug-in with battery back-up. If fireplaces exist within bedrooms, the alarm must be installed in the bedroom, instead of outside the entrance to the room.

Carbon monoxide alarms are available at many local home retail stores, such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Lowe's and cost between $20-$60. Many stores also carry combination carbon monoxide-smoke alarms.
